Maurer – Rebel 2020
Serbia, Fruška Gora
New take on Rebel.
This time Merlot, single vineyard, harvested at 3 different stages, from early to late harvest and aged for 12 months in an old oak barrel.
The colour is deep purple with high intensity.
An exhilarating intense swirl of cassis and red cherries on the first sniff.
Giving it some more time it starts evolving in the glas, or even better in a decanter, revealing ripe juicy plums, dry cranberries, warm spices and fine herbal tones. All this follows one the palate in high balance with addition of dry fig, raisin, fresh bay leaves, cherry pit and well integrated, ripe and smooth tannins.
Overall, an outstanding wine.
Especially interesting about this wine is comparing it with the previous vintage, Rebel 2018, a few posts back on this profile.
There Oszkar was working with Merlot, Kadarka and Mezes Feher (white grape).
We could say that early harvest Merlot is playing the line of Mezes Feher, fresh with brisk acidity.
The second harvest carries aromas so typical for Kadarka – cherry, raspberry and cranberry.
With both wines all the pieces fit together in perfect balance, still maintaining its own pronounced character.
It’s the same band, Joe Strummer, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon play together, but it’s a different song.
